Of Darkness, Vampires, and Soulmates Ch. 8 The Battle Ends

Oh my goodness!!! I can’t believe we’re here!!! It’s the last chapter, y’all!!! Y’all have been screaming at me for seven weeks about how much you hate Rumplestiltskin, and I promised that he would get what was coming to him!! I hope y’all like it!!! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for coming along on this journey with me!!! I’m in tears right now typing this thinking of all the love and comments that y’all have sent my way. Please know that I reread them often and they all mean so SOOOOO much!!!

For the last time for this fic, I’m sending heaps and mounds of love, hugs, and gratitude to @profdanglaisstuff and @hollyethecurious for everything they did to help me bring this story to life. Saira was a fount of knowledge and an endless source of encouragement that was absolutely ESSENTIAL to my perseverance when the going got REALLY tough. Hollye, as one of my very best friends, was always there to discuss plot points, brainstorm, and push, drag, and pull to get me to keep going when I wanted to quit. Thank you both, ladies! The young woman with long red hair and her blonde headed companion pushed a stroller through the front door of the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. Rumplestiltskin stood on the green lawn outside as a malevolent smile took over his face. He pulled a phone from his pocket, dialed and hissed when the call connected, “Your sister is in danger. Come home. Come alone. Or she dies.”

Emma was frantically throwing clothes into a suitcase when Killian came into their bedroom concerned alarm coloring his features.

“What’s going on, Emma?”

“He’s got her,” she choked out, turning back to her closet again. “I don’t even know who he has. He just said ‘your sister.’ I don’t even know who he has!” she exclaimed, turning again and throwing herself into his arms, her sobs breaking through. “Oh god, what if he has both of them?”

“Shhh, shhhh,” he crooned, stroking her back, “You’re not making any sense, love. Who has who?”

“Rumplestiltskin!” she cried, looking up at him, tears streaking down her face. “He CALLED me! How did he have my number? How did he get to her? I knew his voice! He said my sister was in danger, to come home, alone, or she dies. How did he find her? How did he know who she is? Who does he have?” She dissolved into tears again as he held her close.

“Well, you are not going alone, my love,” he asserted, vehemently. “That is absolutely not happening. He’s trying to draw you out, separate us so that we can’t destroy him. Blue can transport us to your home so that we can take him by surprise. He can’t really expect that I’d willingly let you face him alone.” He pulled back from her and cradled her face in his hands. “I’ll be right there with you, Swan,” he affirmed, “and we will defeat him.”

She smiled through her tears, eyes so full of hope that he wanted to promise her the world and everything in it. He drew her back into his arms, murmuring assurances into the crown of her head before letting her go to make preparations to leave.

Emma entered her childhood home, hoping against hope that she’d find one or both of her sisters inside. The churning fear in her gut since she received Rumplestiltskin’s summons had only dissipated when Killian held her in his arms. But he was now outside trying to gain some intelligence about his sire’s presence inside her home. The Blue Fairy had created a magical shield to keep his presence hidden from Rumplestiltskin until he showed himself to Emma.

Their conversation before they had left home continued to plague her mind.

“We’ll save her, Emma. Don’t worry. She’ll be safe.”

“How do you know?

“He wants you, darling,” he promised her. “He wants to inflict as much pain on you, and me by extension, as possible. Which means that whatever he plans to do to harm her, he’ll want to do it in your presence.”

“Anna? Elsa?” she called, “Anyone here?” She walked further into the quietness of her home until she came into the family room. What she found sent her heartbeat into overdrive.

Anna sat on the sofa, unnaturally still, eyes wide with terror, mouth open in a silent scream. Emma took a deep breath, knowing that she had to keep her head about her if they were all going to get out of here safely. She scanned over her sister for any evidence of injury beyond being frozen. Emma’s supernatural hearing could perceive Anna’s small amount of blood loss at the hands of the monster that sat reclined in the chair opposite his captive.

A rage the likes of which she had never felt before came over her before she could blink. She saw red and flew for the demon, hands outstretched and a scream like a banshee ripping out of her open mouth. Before she could reach him, however, Killian burst through the front door situated behind the chair.

Not expecting the attack on two fronts, Rumplestiltskin was momentarily startled giving Killian all the time he needed to grab the cane that he always carried when he was masquerading as a human. The creature howled with fury as he reached out for the crutch just as Emma launched herself at him and landed on his back. She grasped him around the shoulders and hauled herself up until she wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs around his hips. Fangs exposed she drove them into his neck as screams poured out of her prey. She continued feasting as she watched Killian attack.

Killian meantime had taken the cane and broken it over his raised knee, dissolving the glamour spell that had disguised the dagger that the Blue Fairy had made over a millennium before.

Raising it in his hand, he plunged it into Rumplestiltskin’s chest, being careful to angle it so that it wouldn’t come out his back and stab Emma who was still holding on to him for dear life as he thrashed about under their dual assault. Withdrawing the deadly implement, a dark, viscous substance poured from the hole in the creature’s chest and was drawn toward the blade. Killian felt a drag, a pull stronger than he had ever known as the same substance pulled out of himself as well. He was dimly aware of Emma releasing her victim and falling to the floor as the Darkness exited his love. Anna rocked back and forth on the sofa holding herself tightly as she sobbed uncontrollably, and a deathly pale Emma lay lifeless on the floor behind his sire. Rumplestilskin’s blood stained her mouth and her eyes remained open and trained on the ceiling. She had not survived the uprooting of the vile stuff that made her, made them, vampires. Killian rushed to her side and gathered her in his arms.

“No, no, no, no, nooooo!” he cried. “Not again! Please! Emma,” he begged, “don’t leave me. Please,” he cried, trying to shake her awake. “I can’t live without you, Emma. Come back to me, please…” he trailed away, tear filled eyes meeting Anna’s who still sat on the sofa, in a stupor.

“You know what you have to do, Killian,” a soft voice intoned, behind him.

He turned frantic eyes upon the Blue Fairy, who stood on the threshold.

The Dark’s minion’s downfall is foretold

When True Love’s Kiss doth unfold

Between soulmates unbound by time

The blue eyed prince and his golden haired Swan

Their True Love will break the hold

And Dark magic will be no more.

The prophecy ran through his mind. True Love’s Kiss. True Love’s Kiss. True Love’s Kiss will destroy the Darkness! Killian looked down on his peaceful, so still Swan. Begging one last time, he whispered in her ear, “Come back to me, Swan.” His lips met hers in a cascade of rainbow light pulsing outward throughout the house. He pulled away to see the Darkness, the dagger, and even Rumplestiltskin himself dissolve in the presence of magic that was able to break any curse. The magic of True Love.

He looked down into the face of his beloved just as she began to stir. She blinked and looked up at him. “Killian!”

He couldn’t hold back his joyful grin if he tried. He hugged her tightly to himself, murmuring into her neck, “My Swan, my Swan. My darling, Swan...”

She pulled back from him before pulling him back down to capture his lips with her own in a passionate kiss that made him completely forget about their audience. Until the clearing of a throat behind him penetrated his lustful haze.

They pulled apart and looked over to where the Blue Fairy was sitting and holding Anna close, comforting her. Emma cried out and scrambled away from him to get to her sister who was starting to recover from her ordeal.

“What was THAT?!” she cried, gathering Emma in her arms. “Who… What… Uh… How?” she stammered, looking back and forth between Emma, himself, and the Blue Fairy.

After taking a few more moments to sufficiently recuperate from her shock, Anna launched herself into Killian’s arms. Her sobs renewed as her emotional pendulum swung from unbridled joy at being reunited with Killian to indignation at never knowing the truth about him. And Emma, for that matter.

Pulling back from where he finally set her down after spinning her in a bone crushing hug, she slapped his shoulder.

“How could you not tell me? Did Mom know?”

Killian chuckled with a smirk. “I think that’s a tale that’s better told over dinner and a lot of alcohol, my lamb.”

The Blue Fairy used her magic to resolve all the complications created by Anna’s disappearance before they reunited with the others at Elsa’s boyfriend’s restaurant.

If Anna and Killian’s reunion and the conference call they had enjoyed a month ago was thrilling, there was no measuring of the excitement when Killian and Elsa met again. He picked her up and spun her around before gathering her to him in a bear hug that was years in the making. Elsa hugged him back just as tightly.

Over the course of the evening, Killian revealed everything about the curse and how it came about, the prophecy, meeting Emma so many times over the years…

“But, wait a minute,” Anna asked, “You’ve lived three other lives, Emma? Do you remember any of them?”

Emma shrugged. “Can’t say as I do.”

They reminisced about their early years in Massachusetts before moving to Minnesota and learned about how he met Ingrid. Elsa hugged Emma close when they got to the end of the tale of destroying Rumplestiltskin and the Darkness that made them vampires.

“But how do you know,” Anna asked. “How do you know you’re no longer vampires?”

Emma and Killian turned and looked at each other. “It feels different, for one,” Emma said, still looking at Killian. “The fangs and bloodlust are gone, and my heart rate is back to normal.”

Killian continued, “That’s the biggest difference, for sure. We’d obviously gotten pretty good at controlling the thirst, in order to be around anyone else without it taking over, but the hearing and sight are also back to normal. It’s been so long for me, I could barely remember.”

“Wow,” Elsa breathed. She turned then to Killian, eyes brimming with tears before gathering him in for a hug.

“This is all fascinating and hard to believe, even with the evidence before me, but thank you for saving my family,” she whispered. “All of them.”

He pulled back from her with a bashful smile and scratched behind his ear. He was a little surprised that Anna and Elsa didn’t have nearly the problems believing him that he expected. They were very much Ingrid’s daughters.

From there, Emma and Killian returned home to Massachusetts, while Anna and her family and Elsa remained in Minnesota. Emma applied to and began law school at Harvard that fall, after a hastily put together, but still altogether beautiful wedding at their estate about a month after destroying Rumplestiltskin. Killian continued in his occupation of captaining the Jolly Roger throughout the spring and summer months for pleasure cruises along the New England coastline, pirate tours, and renting out his beloved vessel for special events. Elsa won election to the mayor's office in a landslide and was sporting a 1 ½ carat diamond on her left hand that Christmas. Anna and Kristoff continued living in domestic bliss raising their little boy, before finding out they were expecting again right after Thanksgiving. The future before all of them was bright and they walked into that future hand in hand with the ones they loved beside them.

And they all lived Happily Ever After.

It isn’t that he gets lost, it’s that there’s so much to explore in this house. After two years in a basement and six months in an orphanage, doors are a novelty he can’t resist.

His breath catches in his throat as the door opens, revealing an absolute riot of green. Vines creep up the wall, baskets of flowers hang from the ceiling, and whole rows of vegetables grow across the room. Not just vegetables. A small bush sits in the corner, little blue berries hanging off it in clusters.

It can’t be. He hasn’t seen them since the war started.

“Amazing, isn’t it?”

Quentus jumps at Garrus’ voice behind him. He turns and looks up. He nods.

“Some of this is Liv’s, but everything’s labeled,” he points out the tiny handwritten labels. “Anything in black is safe. Help yourself.”

Quentus reads carefully – there’s blue behind the black, like someone traced over the letters to make it easier to stand out from purple – and his eyes widen when he gets to the berries. Korcha, like he thought. His mouth waters at the memory of tart berries exploding on his tongue, but a flash of orange catches his eye as he reaches out toward the bush.

He hasn’t seen those since the war started, either. He checked the garden when they left, just in case any had managed to survived, but all the flowers his father lovingly planted and tended had long died. Quentus had swallowed the tears he’d never actually shed and left the dead flowers behind with everything else of their home, burnt and dried out, lifeless.

He leans in and takes a breath. His eyes close as the warm, spicy scent dances through his senses. It smells of spring and hope, of sitting on the rocky lawn watching his dad dig in the dirt to plant tiny seeds, impossibly tiny, so tiny Quentus never believed they’d grow into anything at all, of being proved wrong in summer when they suddenly bloomed and glow bugs flitted around their brilliant petals at dusk.

“You okay?” Garrus asks quietly.

Quentus swallows around a hard lump in his throat as his subvocals trill with sadness in a distress range he isn’t yet able to silence. “We had them in our back yard,” he whispers. “Dad grew them.”

Garrus’ subvocals shift to counter his, a gentle soothing rumble Quentus hasn’t heard since…in a long time.

The lump in his throat tightens. He turns and takes the three steps toward Garrus at a run. Garrus catches him with open arms and Quentus clings to him with all the strength he has.

His mom is dead. His dad is dead. He snuck out of the closet and covered the bloodstain with a carpet before Nico woke up. It hid the stain from his brother, but Quentus looked at that carpet every day for a year and a half and knew what was under it. Their house is destroyed, the garden dried up and dead. He never did find his durak ball. His friends are dead or lost or gone. Palaven is a bombed out shell of what it once was, almost dead too. And they left. They left together and with two wonderful people who will love them and take care of them, but Quentus left. When he left all the dead and dried and lost, he also left all the things he couldn’t carry. The stupid chair he and Nico always fought over. Their height markers on the kitchen wall. Mom’s hugs on a bad day. Dad’s smile while he cooked.

He has only one picture. The four of them on vacation the year before the war started. He’s wearing a stupid shirt and Nico’s eyes are closed. He wishes he had a picture of just Mom and Dad. He wishes he had more than a picture.

More than anything, he wishes he had more than a picture.

Quentus clings to Garrus in the room full of things that are alive and finally, finally, cries for two people who are not.

A dear friend shared with me that Ari’s last day on earth was the last day of summer, Thursday, September 22. Ari loved summer so it was only fitting that her last moments were on a day that would end her definition of bliss. This post is dedicated to my friend who shared this. Lauren Lubrano, thank you.

September 23, 2016. There were people everywhere. People in my house, in my back yard, on my front lawn, on my neighbor’s front lawn. We had a police escort (Thank-you) at my house. It was just complete chaos. I’ll never forget my dad speaking the words, “I can’t believe I have to bury my baby”. I felt like somebody was squeezing my lungs. I couldn't breathe. “Where am I? Is this real?” I couldn't get a grip on reality.

I don't know if anybody remembers, but it rained for days. There was literally no sunlight. I remember turning to my best friend as I'm looking out the window and asked her, “Do you think Ari is sad for us? It just keeps raining”. On the nights that it didn’t rain, my mom wanted people to sit outside around a fire. My best friend and her husband brought over a little chimenea that my mom requested. On those nights, I thought about killing myself. I absolutely could not deal with what was going on around me.

My favorite season became so cold and dark so quickly. Not only was I depressed, the “coldness” only made the next couple of weeks even worse. While battling these feelings and thoughts, I had to be the strong one. Do you know what it’s like having to pick out clothes for your sibling to wear in a casket? My mom wasn't able to do it, I had to. I had to pick proper undergarments. I had to pick a bra, underwear, right down to her shoes. It made me sick to my stomach. For those of you who knew Ari, you knew she had a lot of clothes, some still unworn. I picked out a dress that still had tags on it, that seemed to be the most suitable. I wanted to throw up.

After her clothes were picked out, I had to go to the funeral home to view her body. Now, for those of you who have experience death before, you know that when you go to a funeral, the individual looks different then the last time you saw them. I was scared. I could vividly remember my last memory of her, and now, that was about to be destroyed forever. As I entered the somber room, I walked up to my sister. She had scars on her face, her nails were missing, her face was swollen, her nose was broken. There goes my stomach turning again.

Imagine my mother going up to her child and pinpointing every scar on her lifeless body, lying in a casket. “I know your face baby, you didn’t have those scars before”. These words were like nails on a chalkboard, scarring me, as I began to experience the worst day of my life.

Every night after this day, for three hundred and sixty-five days, I would close my eyes before going to sleep only to see those images. Seeing flashes of her nails being ripped off, the scars on her arms. These images stayed and still stay in my mind. I imagined the night that she died. Did she scream? Did she say, “Omg I'm about to die”? I will never know. These were the thoughts running in my head every single night before going to bed, and every single morning as I would wake up to face another day, without her.

Later that week, I had to go find a dress to wear on the day of my sister’s funeral. Ari wasn't someone who just “threw on” an outfit and left the house, she dressed to impress. I always admired her for that even though it took her forever to get ready, she put on. So, my best friends took me out to search for the right dress, one that would fit the occasion and help me pay my respects to my beautiful fashionista. I was tired of looking and I was becoming very frustrated of having to do something that I didn’t even want to do in the first place.

I knew a local designer that I consider to be a friend, not only is she a very talented designer but she is also an amazing person because of the most gracious act of kindness she did for me. I reached out to a couple of my friends in hopes that I could get in touch with this designer. I wanted to reach out to her because I needed to wear something that no one had, a dress that would fit this melancholy event. This wonderful designer’s name is Latasha Hall. Thank you, Tasha.

Again, on another rainy day, my girlfriends and I set out to find this dress. I went to Latasha’s office, she had a handful of dresses and I just kept trying them on until I found the right one. This was like finding a wedding dress, but it wasn’t for a wedding. I was trying on a dress to wear so that I could properly say goodbye to my sister. I found that dress, and when I did tears immediately started running down my face, and I began to sob. I just couldn't believe that this was my reality. But thanks to Latasha, I was able to wear a beautiful dress.

September 30th, 2016, the day of the funeral. Ariana would never be able to be my maid of honor, but I was her's that day. The service was beautiful, just how I imagined it to be. People who have never experienced a celebration of life came up to me and said that they were at peace. I thank my Pastor Danny Scotton for that. Police escorts, people from the community all came to pay their respects. She is truly loved. I’m just sad that September and every September for the rest of my life will feel so cold.

Its meant to be near midnight, but the bright sky and lack of shading imply otherwise. -Jude's front door and the paneling on it will change in scale just about every panel. (side note: This song recently entered the public domain) -Jude's outfit was inspired by Back to the Future's Marty McFly. -I forgot to put a candle in the birthday apple pie. -You may notice Jude has no visible fridge in his kitchen. Jude cant afford a full fridge, or fit it in his kitchen. Instead, anything he needs cold is kept in a basement mini-fridge. -Jude’s facial features and hair take inspiration from Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers of Scooby Doo. -You may notice the quality of characters hands changing. Hands are still difficult for me, but I'm hoping to improve. -My brother pointed out that the carpet in Jude's living room looks like grass. I'm not really certain how one draws carpet. -The leftmost painting depicts two figures with an arm around the others shoulder. A third figure appears later, but there is no story significance, I just forgot what it was supposed to be. RFO 3 -The overly enthusiastic individual at Jude's door is meant to be androgynous. I feel I made them a little too masculine -The design on the handbag clearly denotes a christian denomination, although not any specific one. I wanted it to be generic, but evocative of several things. (a cross, a sword, an angel, a shooting star, etc) -While it was done primarily to help them stand out, the white outline around the stranger nicely implies a holy glow. -I'm most proud of this page, and how uncomfortable and annoyed Jude is by this stranger interrupting his birthday and asking about religion at midnight. -Several of these pages were first sketched in faint colored pencil. Its not meant to show up when scanned, but clearly that didn't work quite as advertised. -You may notice proportions are inconsistent, especially regarding head size. Like most of my mistakes, I did not notice until it was already too late to fix without starting the whole page over. -The handbag is unshaded in the last panel. RFO 4 -I'm not sure how I feel about these sound effects in retrospect. I'm still toying with how they work. -One habit I need to break is placing speech bubbles too close to the papers edge. The scanner sometimes cuts them! -As Jude gets more confused and frustrated by strangers popping up at or in his house, his hair gets wilder. -Jude's house layout is similar to several I personally have been in. RFO 5 -I'm not happy at all with the posing of the officer; they're so stiff and lifeless. While I could try to pass it off as part of the stranger's idea of how a police officer asks, the truth is that even when my skills weren't rusty; posing was never my strong suit. -Some panels have blank backgrounds partly due to laziness on my part, and partly so the paper could be held without smearing -The officer's nametag reads 'GATES'.This, along with his unusual badge and emblems, indicate that this is still the same person who was at Jude's door only a minute before. RFO 6 -I don't have much to say about this page, except that the officers uniform is visibly becoming simpler by the panel. This is because drawing those details was hurting my wrist. In the future I will try to be more economical with character design. RFO 7 -If the past ten weeks have taught me anything, its that I should plan out what I'm going to do more thoroughly. Jude's speech balloon was drawn first, and ended up over the other man's crotch. Now it looks stupid. -The officer (stranger) tends to be to Jude left, while the other man tends to the right. -The middle left panel is another I'm proud of, not for any major thing, but because tilting the head is difficult for me to do on purpose; especially when the part of the head where the jaw meets the neck is visible, but I think I did okay here. -The hard angles and edges of the final speech balloon show the officer is stern and serious. It is also shaped like a stop sign. RFO 8 -While the officer is still left of Jude (to the viewer), he is now right of the other man. Left positioning in RFO signifies benevolence, right signifies malice. It could have been the opposite just as easily, but sometimes you have to make an arbitrary choice for theming purposes. -The other man's hair forms horns on the sides and a tail in the back whereas the officer's (stranger's) hair is more flowing and wing-like. -Jude only owns one other jacket, as seen in his barren closet. -The officer's proportions in the bottom left are so off, I'm not sure why I thought it looked okay. -The other man's outfit and personality are meant to evoke a stereotypical used car salesman. Also Rodney Dangerfield! RFO 9 -Not much to say here. I will continue to simplify the style until an equilibrium is met between making things look good versus not destroying my wrist. -Also, the other man's sleeve in the first panel is missing its vertical stripes. RFO 10 -Jude's face in the last panel seems off to me. I don't quite know why, and I'm the one who drew it. -When I originally planned this page out, there was too much vertical space. It would have left me either having to draw their legs (which would been difficult with the furniture in the scene at leg height) or leaving a terrible amount of dead air above their heads.
